Small Satellites Conference (Virtual Conference)

Announcement: this event has now become online only and will be held on the SAE Media Group Virtual Conference Platform.

With the Small Satellites market expected to grow into a $7.53 bn (£5.94 bn) industry by 2022, the ability to deliver connectivity here on the ground through new LEO constellations mantel is already being seriously developed by leading industry and government stakeholders worldwide.

As adoption of small, nano and cube satellite constellations has been driven by the commercial market – in particular for COMSATCOM – there is now growing consensus that architectures of military systems can and must include architecture that will support LEO solution provision.

With this in mind, SAE Media Group are delighted to announce the inaugural Small Satellites conference taking place on the 26th - 27th April 2021, which will explore economies of scale, small satellite production and design, regulatory considerations in the increasingly congested domain and key programme updates from across leading space agencies, militaries and commercial solution providers. 

This conference will be held in British Summer Time (GMT+1)

Captain Jacob Singleton

Jacob Singleton is an exchange officer from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Directorate and coordinates international efforts for AFWERX which connects innovators to accelerate agile capability development for the Air Force. He currently serves within the MOD as the Space Innovation Lead for Dstl.

Jacob is the founder of the AF Space Accelerator Program which encourages more agile business practices and nontraditional partnerships with startups and small businesses to meet defense needs.

Jacob is a graduate from Utah State University and has a Master of Science in Astronautical Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology.

Dr Richard Welle

Senior Scientist, xLab, The Aerospace Corporation
Dr Richard Welle

Dr. Richard Welle is a senior scientist in The Aerospace Corporation's xLab, where he focuses on the development of new applications for CubeSat-class spacecraft, with an emphasis on CubeSat-scale optical communication. Prior to this, he was director of the Microsatellite Systems Department in the Space Materials Laboratory, where he led the Aerospace CubeSat program. Dr. Welle joined The Aerospace Corporation in 1986, supporting launch vehicles and satellite systems over a range of disciplines. Since 2005 his work has focused on microsatellites and microsatellite systems. Dr. Welle earned his B.A. in physics and chemistry from Southwest State University, Marshall, Minnesota; his M.S. in physics from the University of Tennessee Space Institute; and his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. He has over 60 technical publications and has been awarded 29 patents for inventions relating to small satellites, microfluidics, identification taggants, solar power, ultrasonics, and optical communications.

Dr Stuart Eves

Director, SJE Space Ltd
Dr Stuart Eves

Stuart Eves is a satellite-system engineer. In 2018 he formed his own space consultancy company, SJE Space, after spending 14 years with Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) and 16 years with the UK Ministry Of Defence. 

During his time with the MOD, Stuart initiated the TopSat surveillance satellite programme, which established a new world record for “resolution per mass of satellite”, and for a time formed part of the space gallery at the Science Museum.

He has recently published Space Traffic Control, a book which describes the measures needed to maintain the space environment and protect satellites from both natural hazards and man-made threats such as space debris. 

Stuart has an MSc in Astrophysics, a PhD in constellation design, and has been a fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Interplanetary Society for more than 25 years. He takes an active interest in all things space, and is thus best described as an “astro-nut”!
 

Mr Andrew Cawthorne

Mr Andrew Cawthorne

Following his Master’s degree in Astronautics and Space Engineering at Cranfield University, Andrew went to the European Space Agency in The Netherlands as a systems engineer. As part of the Aurora programme Andrew was involved in a number of diverse projects, from the definition of a human mission
to Mars, to precursor work for the ExoMars rover.

In 2004 Andrew moved to SSTL as a systems engineer initially working on TopSat, a UK high resolution imaging demonstrator. Following that he became the technical lead on NigeriaSat-2, a sophisticated imaging mission for the Nigerian government. Andrew also worked as the engineer supporting the Earth
Observation business line, responsible for technical strategy across all of the Earth Observation missions.

In 2012 Andrew became the Head of Earth Observation, responsible for EO business within SSTL. As part of this role he has negotiated several major new contracts and overseen the design and development of the DMC3 constellation.

In 2016 Andrew became Business Line Director for Earth Observation. He is currently the Director of Business Development and Sales.

Mr Andrew Vick

Head of Disruptive Technology, STFC-UKRI (Science and Technology Facilities Council, UK Research and Innovation)
Mr Andrew Vick

Andy Vick is leading a disruptive development program for space applications at RAL Space, UKRIs world-leading research, development and service facility at Harwell in Oxfordshire. He is the UK PI for QKD Qubesat, a quantum communications mission with Singapore’s Centre for Quantum technology and is providing support to the UK National Quantum Technology Programme.
Previously Andy was based at the UK-ATC in Edinburgh where he developed instruments for the Astrophysics community and Geo-Physics research. In 2015 he commissioned a novel SWIR Spectrometer, GHOST, which flew multiple 25-hour, 18,000m flights on NASAs Global Hawks measuring greenhouse gasses.
 

Mr Andrey Maksimov

CEO and Co-Founder, Precious Payload
Mr Andrey Maksimov

Andrew Maximov is a serial entrepreneur and investor. At the age of 21, co-founded a trading company to trade physical gold in Africa (failed). At the age of 23 co-founded the first online commodity exchange marketplace in MENA Region (successful exit in 2014). By 25, sold his second venture to a strategic partner (security software products) and became active as an angel investor. In 2017, Andrew co-founded Precious Payload, a software space tech startup that makes planning and execution of satellite missions easier by taking care of the paperwork, technical analysis, and supply chain management.

Mr Chuen Chern Loo

Mr Chuen Chern Loo

Chuen Chern Loo graduated from the National University of Singapore with an Honours degree in engineering, the Nanyang Technological University with a Masters of Science in Digital Communications, and the University of Bradford with a Master of Business Administration. He has worked for more than 20 years in the space industry, including working with satellite operators and manufacturers, before moving to Geneva to work in the space services department in ITU, where he is currently the Head of Space Publication and Registration Division, responsible for the registrations and publication of all satellite network filings as well as the maintenance of the Master Register.

Mr Claude Rousseau

Mr Claude Rousseau

Mr. Rousseau has more than 25 years of experience in the space and satellite sector and has worked in various functions in business, management, consulting, research, administration and marketing communications throughout his career.

He joined NSR in 2006 where he currently acts as Research Director, responsible for market research, and consulting engagements in Unmanned Aerial Systems; High-Altitude Platforms; Satellite Manufacturing and Launch Services; Small Satellites; Flat Panel Antennas; In-Orbit Servicing & Space Situational Awareness; Space Travel & Tourism; Big Data; Optical Communications & Cloud Computing via Satellite and Earth Observation. He provides regional expertise in Europe, the Middle-East and Africa region.

Mr. Rousseau was previously with the International Space University (ISU), a higher education institution for which he managed Professional Development Programs. He is currently an Adjunct Faculty at ISU. He later co-founded Futuraspace, an international space consulting firm. Earlier, he worked for the Canadian Space Agency where he held various positions in administration, management and strategy.

He has a B.Sc. with majors in Physics and Astrophysics from the University of Calgary (Canada) and a Master of Space Studies (MSc.) from the International Space University (France). Mr. Rousseau is based in Strasbourg, France.

Mr Grzegorz Zwolinski

A member of the board of directors of companies with more than 10 years of experience in managing R&D projects.
A Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of SatRevolution S.A. – a leading, Polish space industry company, responsible for Poland’s first commercial satellite - Swiatowid. SatRevolution is a producer of payloads and complete spacecrafts for space industry. It is focused on small, lightweight and reliable spacecrafts. The company aims to create constellation of earth observation satellites capable of imaging every place on Earth every hour – a Real-time Earth observation Constellation (REC).
 

Mr Michael Rudd

Head of Telecommunications Strategy, UK Space Agency
Mr Michael Rudd

Mike Rudd joined the UK Space Agency in 2016 and is charged with growing the Telecoms sector of Space as the Head of Telecommunications Strategy as part of the Agency’s ambition to capture 10% of the global market by 2030.

His role involves Working with Government, ESA, academia and industry to bring new and innovative satellite Telecoms technologies and services to the market; creating and delivering the Agency’s strategy on Telecoms infrastructure; supporting work on the Civil Space Strategy, Governmental and societal challenges and Supporting UK industry to grow and develop their businesses, investing through ESA’s ARTES programme and other means.

Prior to joining the Agency, Mike spent some 30 years in various telecommunications roles for Defence.

In his spare time, Mike enjoys visits to the cinema, renovating his house and making cheese.
 

Mr Ricardo Conde

Ricardo Conde, 55 years old, is the father of two beautiful girls. He holds a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from IST – Technical University of Lisbon and a postgraduate degree in Space Technologies. He began his professional career in 1991, having been linked to the Aeronautics and Space sector since 1993 with the participation in several National and International programs, in particular in Space and Ground segments. He was recently responsible for Ground Segment Business Development at Edisoft, SA (Thales Group). In 2019 Ricardo joined the Portuguese Space Agency, Portugal Space as a member of the board. About one year later, Ricardo Conde was appointed President of the Portuguese Space Agency.

Mr Roger Hunter

Programme Manager, Small Spacecraft and Technology, NASA
Mr Roger Hunter

With over 40 years’ experience in US Department of Defense, Commercial, and Government Space Missions, Roger Hunter currently serves as Program Manager for NASA Small Spacecraft Technology. In this capacity for the past 5+ years, he identifies and supports the development of new subsystem technologies to expand the capabilities of small spacecraft for NASA science and exploration objectives. Previously, he served for over 6 years as the Program Manager for the NASA Kepler Mission. The Kepler Mission’s principal scientific objective has been to determine the frequency of Earth-size planets, in the habitable zone, of other stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. While working in the commercial space industry, Roger was the Program Manager for the Boeing Corporation’s Global Positioning System Sustainment activities for the the US Air Force. Roger also had a successful career in the US Air Force where he had assignments as a Program Manager for several space programs. Colonel Hunter also served as a Squadron Commander and a Deputy Operations Group Commander within the US Air Force’s 50th Space Wing. Other US Air Force tours of duty included assignments with the Headquarters US Air Force, at the Pentagon; Headquarters US Air Force Space Command, and the US Air Force Research Laboratory. He holds academic degrees from the University of Georgia, The US Air Force Institute of Technology and the US Air Force School of Advanced Airpower Studies. Roger is also a graduate of the US Air Force Air Command and Staff College and the US Air Force Air War College (C). During his career he has lectured at: numerous US universities; the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, CA; the University of Naples Federico II in Naples, Italy; the University of Florence in Florence, Italy; Rolls Royce HQ in Derby, England; the India Institute of Technology, Guwahati India; and he’s a TEDx alumnus. His personal interests include reading, travel, tennis, running (many 10Ks, two half-marathons, two marathons, and counting), good wine, and good memes.
 

Mr Thomas Welter

Mr Thomas Welter

Thomas Welter is currently Head of Regulatory Affairs and Orbit/Spectrum Resources at the Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR), the French public agency in charge of spectrum management. In his position, he is directly responsible for the satellite frequency registration of all French satellites, both governmental and commercial, as well as of the coordination of the French preparatory work for international frequency negotiations held during ITU World Radiocommunication Conferences. Thomas Welter holds diplomas in telecommunications engineering, as well as space and telecommunications law.

Mr Tim Rush

Mr Tim Rush

Tim Rush has over 35 years experience in the commercial space industry leading multinational programs and structuring / negotiating complex agreements. He provided technical leadership during the industry’s early development building, launching and operating commercial satellites. As a satellite engineer and manager for Intelsat, Comsat and Fairchild Space Company, Tim supported and managed development, procurement, construction, launch and in-orbit operation of more than 30 GEO and LEO satellites. As the industry matured and commercialized, Tim became a financial advisor / insurance broker providing risk management guidance and orchestrating placement of property and liability insurance programs for businesses that operate in space. Tim has placed over $5 Billion of launch and in-orbit coverages and successfully settled of a number of challenging claims. He has also lead satellite risk due diligence efforts for several sector mergers and acquisitions and served as insurance advisor to secured lenders and export credit agencies.
Tim has a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Delaware, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Maryland. He often speaks at industry events including annual satellite conferences in Washington DC, Silicon Valley, and the World Space Risk Forum.

Merissa Velez is the Chief of the Satellite Policy Branch within the Satellite Division, International Bureau, of the Federal Communications Commission. In this role, she focuses on satellite licensing, and has been particularly involved with small satellite and orbital debris issues.

Rich served nearly 30 years in the Air Force’s space and nuclear ops enterprises. In parallel, he worked over 16 years in aerospace & defense industry leading ASD/R&E rapid capability programs at multiple Combatant Commands, Service Commands and Agencies. He also led community/defense integration activities at the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC.

Professor Christopher Newman

Christopher J. Newman, BA(Hons), PhD is Professor of Space Law and Policy at Northumbria University at Newcastle in the United Kingdom. He is active in the teaching and research of space law and has published extensively on the legal and ethical underpinnings of space governance. Christopher is a member of the International Institute of Space Law and has taken part in funded projects for the UK Space Agency on future trends in orbital regulation. He is regularly invited to lecture in universities and at specialist conferences on space law and policy across the UK and internationally.

Malcolm is Chair of Applied Space Technology at the University of Strathclyde, and has worked in both government and industry at board level.     WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
