Andrew Gibbons

Andrew Gibbons : Telesales Manager

I joined SMi Group’s Market Research Team in 1999 after graduating from St Mary’s University College. A short stint with the team ended when I was poached by the Sales Director to join the Telesales team.

Since then I have not had time to look back. I have brought in a considerable amount of revenue in my 15 year term and have a number of records under my belt including the highest monthly revenue for a telesales person and the coveted position of Top Telesales person for 5 years in a row. In between making money I have also moved my way up the company ladder and now manage a team of 8 salespeople as Telesales Manager as well as finding time to recruit, train and mentor new staff.


Carla Bixby : HR and Payroll Manager

I joined SMi Group in 2001 as a Purchase Ledger Assistant and my talents lead me to a promotion within 5 months to Purchase Ledger Supervisor.

Over the years I have taken on many new responsibilities including HR, Payroll, more accounts responsibilities and team management from time to time. The variety in my job role and the team stability has been influential in me staying at SMi Group for over 13 years.

I have taken on tasks that I never thought I could do but now I feel that I have achieved far more than I thought I would. I always give work 150% but when I am not you will usually find me letting my hair down at the nearest Theme Park.


Elaine Rogers: Receptionist

I joined SMi Group at its inception in 1993 as a Conference Co-ordinator running SMi’s events having previously spent 16 years working for the Institute of Directors in their Conference and Events Department which included not only events for their members but also their prestigious Annual Convention held at the Royal Albert Hall.

Over the years I have helped organise some of the company’s largest events. I am now working as the Company’s Receptionist but continue to work very closely with the Events Team which I thoroughly enjoy. We all chip in to help each other out. They definitely make me feel part of the team and together we ensure the success of every event


Fateja Begum

Fateja Begum: Telesales Executive

I joined SMi Group in 2012 having gained over 5 year’s experience working across the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare industry.

Recognised by senior management as someone who always applies their knowledge and passion to everything, I was tasked with designing and implementing the Company’s LinkedIn training which still includes ongoing one to one training.

I have also been active in working with senior management in the launch of new events both in Europe and North America.

The icing on the cake is I recently achieved the monthly record for delegate revenue booked in 2014. I am always enthusiastic about keeping SMi’s Pharmaceutical division in the premier league of events!

I am a perfectionist who will always give 150% to ensure my events hit target.

Success at the job means I can spoil my nephews and nieces whenever I want!


Julia Rotar

Julia Rotar: Head of Marketing

I was born in Kazakhstan and grew up in Siberia. I have published a few books of poetry in Russian and am a master of sports in rhythmic gymnastics.

I began my career as a journalist and TV presenter in Russia before moving to London in 2004 to complete my master’s degree in Management at City University of London.

I began working in the events business in 2008, covering the energy sector for the Americas and Central and Eastern Europe. I joined SMi Group in 2013 as a Marketing Manager working across various industries. My enthusiasm, leadership qualities and creative mind were recognised by senior management and after 7 months I was promoted to the new position of Head of Marketing. I now manage a team of 7 Marketing professionals as well as working on some of SMi Group’s largest events.

I now live in North London with my husband, daughter and 20 gold fish.


Samara Rizvi

Samara Rizvi: Credit Manager

I am a highly motivated postgraduate in international business management from Middlesex University, with experience in the Aviation and Travel Sectors.

I joined the SMi accounts team in 2012 as a credit controller. I have always been interested in business and working at SMi Group is like “meeting like-minded people”. I love figures, and enjoy driving a calculator.

My job sets me monthly targets which I achieve with full customer satisfaction. I also need to pay attention to detail as I am working with numbers and spreadsheets every day. I was promoted to Credit manager earlier this year

I firmly believe in the famous words of Henry Ford ‘Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”

I am good humoured, approachable, friendly and as much as I love my work I enjoy working with colleagues in mine and other departments.

Being motivated and driven, I see myself in a position where I am able to handle more responsibility, supporting and guiding and striving to set good example for others.

 


 

Teri Arri: Senior Marketing Executive

I joined SMi Group in 1999 as a researcher 2 weeks after graduating with a 2.1 honours degree from London Southbank University.

I moved on to becoming one of the most successful Telesales people in the company generating a substantial sum of money. My success lead to senior management promoting me to Assistant Manager of Telesales with responsibility for training and recruitment.

Finally in 2013, I achieved my long term ambition and changed my career path by moving into Marketing, where I have recently been promoted to Senior Marketing Executive due to a high ratio of my events hitting revenue target.

Over the course of my career I have developed in-depth industry knowledge in sectors such as Pharmaceuticals and Defence. I am respected for my loyalty and abilities to maintain and develop key accounts with media partners.




WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SMI Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
